Log suppliers in the UK are not permitted to sell logs based on weight due to the nature of wood and it’s inconsistencies.
Different hardwood/Softwood species vary greatly in weight naturally due to the tightness of the grain, the time taken for the tree to grow, moisture content along with many other variables.
For example - if you had the same size logs with the same moisture content - one ash log and one oak log - the oak log would weigh substantially more due to its tight grain than the ash log which has a looser grain.
So a cubic metre bag of ash logs would weigh a lot less than a cubic metre bag of oak logs HOWEVER the volume of logs would be the same ie both cubic metre bags would be full of logs despite having a different weight.
(Please note we only used separate log species in this example to explain. Baxter logs do not segregate hardwood species we sell MIXED seasoned hardwood)
Due to the nature of real wood fuels they also contain some moisture therefore logs at 10-15% moisture content would weigh less than a load at 18-20% content making weight an unreliable measure for firewood.
Logs and firewood are therefore usually sold by volume m3.
We use special Cubic metre ventilated bags to season, store and transport baxter logs firewood.
Our cubic metre bags measure 1.05 x 0.96 x 1.00 = 1m3
(Please note the logs are sold loose, bags used for storage and transportation purposes only.)
A cubic metre is approximately equivalent in VOLUME to two builders dumpy bags.
See picture below as demonstrated by Ivy on the left is a cubic metre bag and on the right is a builders bag.
Please remember when comparing us to others that we sell a true INTERNAL cubic metre.
To compare to other suppliers our cubic metre bag size is: 1.05x 0.96 x 1.00 = 1m3
CALCULATING BAG VOLUMES:
To calculate a bag size to compare suppliers you need the width, height & depth in metres or if in cm convert to metres to multiple together which will tell you the cubic metre volume in the bag.
( Height x Width x Depth = Volume )
For example most other suppliers log bags are described as builders/Dumpy bags that measure one of the following:
0.80 x0.80 x 0.80 = 0.51m3
0.85 x 0.85 x 0.85 = 0.61m3
0.87 x 0.87 x 0.87 = 0.65m3
Please note as above there are many different sizes of builders/dumpy bags we advise you ask for the actual bag measurments.
(Nearly half the size of our bags yet they are known to mis-advertise them as 0.8m3 loose volume without any bag measuremenst supplied for you to work it our for yourself but that is a whole other story 🤦🏼♀️)
Sometimes to add to the confusion suppliers refer to builders bags as tonne bags or dumpy bags.
This is simply because at the builders merchants this size of bag holds a tonne of sand.
There is not a tonne of logs in a builder bag !!
We are one of the cheapest firewood suppliers in the area per cubic metre load of logs and pride ourselves on suppling the highest standard of seasoned hardwood logs Woodsure ready to burn accredited.
